Happy Thanksgiving!
26/11/20, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We congratulate all our St. Vladimir's family and friends with the Thanksgiving Holiday. This civil holiday - very Christian in its character - reminds us of our need to thank God for His many blessings upon us. May we humbly suggest, before you sit down to your family dinner today, that you take a few minutes either privately or as a family to thank God for the many blessings He has given you this past year, and for the many blessings He has given to our parish family. We are privileged to call you all brothers and sisters in Christ, and we thank God for you and for our parish family. Happy Thanksgiving!

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
25/11/20, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the childrens portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of Blessed Theophylact

For Children: from the Antiochian Archdiocese (various age groups)

Thanksgiving is Coming Special Collections
24/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Each year around the Thanksgiving Holiday we have two special collections in our parish to assist those in need. We thank God prayerfully for His bounty towards us, and we thank Him materially by helping those who are struggling in this life.

On the Sunday BEFORE Thanksgiving (this coming Sunday, November 22) we have a collection to support International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC). IOCC is the clearinghouse charity for all Orthodox Churches in North America. They provide help to all in need in North American and throughout the world regardless of their confession of faith.

Update 11/23/20: We collected $172 on Sunday, November 22 for IOCC. Thank you all!

On the Sunday AFTER Thanksgiving (Sunday, November 29) we have a collection to support our Diocesan Fund for those in Need. Archbishop Peter is often approached for help this fund allows him to help those who are appealing to him in their time of difficulty.

Both these collections will take place in the church at the end of the Liturgy, as we receive the antidron. If you would like to support the November 29 collection you can do that here (please specify the reason for your donation):

Nativity Lent Begins November 28
24/11/20, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please note that the yearly Lenten period in preparation for our Lords Nativity begins on November 28. From this day until January 7 we do not partake of meat or dairy products. On many days during this lent fish is allowed. Please consult the parish schedule of services for details in this regard. Have questions about fasting? Never tried to follow the fast before? Please talk to Fr. Gregory for answers! We abstain from meats that we might abstain from the passions... writes St. John Chrysostom. Let us indeed use the fast for what it is a tool to aid us in our spiritual struggle for salvation!

Midnight Liturgy this Thanksgiving Day
23/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please join us Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. and into the early morning of Thursday (we usually finish these Midnight Liturgies about 1:30 a.m.) for the annual commemoration of St. John Chrysostom. Yes St. John reposed on the feast of the Exultation of the Cross, but because of the significance of that holiday his feast day is transferred to November 13/26 each year. This year November 26 is Thanksgiving Day! Since eucharist means thanksgiving, and since St. John compiled the Divine Liturgy that we use most often during the year, it seems that this is the PERFECT day to partake of Holy Communion. We will all feast later in the day according to our American tradition. Let us begin the day with the True Feast established by our Lord Himself: the Holy Eucharist!

All are welcome! The services will be inside the church, so we ask that you sign up. This allows us to understand the number of people that will attend since we have limited, physically distanced spaces inside the temple. The link to the sign up sheet can be found on our parish home page. If you have any trouble finding that please email: info@stvladimriaami.org.

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
22/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: II Thessalonians 1:1-10 & Luke 12:13-15,22-31
Tuesday: II Thessalonians 1:10-2:2 & Luke 12:42-48
Wednesday: II Thessalonians 2:1-12 & Luke 12:48-59
Thursday: II Thessalonians 2:13-3:5 & Luke 13:1-9
Friday: II Thessalonians 3:6-18 & Luke 13:31-35
Saturday: Galatians 1:3-10 & Luke 9:37-43

Please find below several very nice articles on how to read the scripture from an Orthodox point of view.
