Non-Perishable Food Collections: Always at STV
21/3/23, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

At STV we collect non-perishable food items. Always. We don't have food drives - we do this every single day. There are many people in our local community who are food insecure. We ask our parishioners to bring a can or box of non-perishable food every time they come to church. Make this a part of your family worship! The little you give means a lot to a family who is food insecure. Remember our Lord's admonition to us in this regard: "For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Matthew 25:35-40)

AS WE ENTER INTO GREAT LENT, LET US BE ESPECIALLY ATTENTIVE TO MODERATION IN OUR OWN EATING AND GENEROUS IN OUR SUPPORTING THOSE WHO ARE FOOD INSECURE!

Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers

“If you seek justice in anything—when your neighbor treats you unjustly, dishonors you, reviles you, hits you, persecutes you, or even plots against your life—you are unjust if you consider him to be the cause or passionately criticize him. For you are seeking from him something that God has not given him. If you understand fully what I am telling you, everyone will seem unaccountable for whatever his faults may be, and only you will be accountable for everything.”

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
19/3/23, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable – others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: Isaiah 14:24-32, Genesis 8:21-9:7, Proverbs 11:19-12:6
Tuesday: Isaiah 25:1-9, Genesis 9:8-17, Proverbs 12:8-22
Wednesday: Isaiah 26:21-27:9, Genesis 9:18-10:1, Proverbs 12:21-13:9
Thursday: Isaiah 28:14-22, Genesis 10:32-11:9, Proverbs 13:20-14:6
Friday: Isaiah 29:13-23, Genesis 12:1-7, Proverbs 14:15-26

Confession & Communion at St. Vladimir’s + Rule to Prepare for Communion
19/3/23, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Confession and Communion are the two sacraments we most often partake of as Orthodox Christians and thus it behooves us to learn about these, how to prepare for these, and how to best take advantage of the Grace that our Lord freely gives us in these sacraments. At St. Vladimir’s we have created a special web site for this purpose with much information in this regard. Please find the web site listed below and please contact Fr. Gregory with questions!
