During Great Lent at all weekday services, and on many Saturdays (beginning even before Great Lent with the first Soul Saturday on February 26) the departed are specially commemorated.

Other Soul Saturdays this Great Lent:

You can arrange commemoration of your friends and loved ones by visiting our special page in this regard here:

COMMEMORATIONS AT THE DIVINE LITURGY

There is lots of good information there and you should read that all at some point. If you don’t have time to do that now please visit our on-line form to submit names (under the commemoration of the departed you can choose “Great Lent 2023: All Weekday Services + Soul Saturdays”):

If you are in a financial position to make a donation for commemorating your loved ones you can do that here – if you aren’t this is not a problem since the Church does not charge for prayer, but is thankful for donations in this regard:

Kursk Icon Visit is this Weekend
15/3/23, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

God willing the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God will visit our St. Vladimir parish on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19. As is our parish tradition, we hope to keep the church open all night from Saturday to Sunday to allow people to venerate the icon from around our region. This provides a wonderful opportunity for our parish family members to spend time with the icon in the church in a quiet, prayerful atmosphere. But in order to provide this service to our parish family, friends, and neighbors we need volunteers to be with the icon at all times. The sign up for this duty can be found here:

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
15/3/23, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

Presanctified Liturgy
Литургия Преждеосвященных Даров ~6:00 p.m.

Following Liturgy: Lenten Dinner ~ После Литургии: Постный Ужин

The Liturgical Fast for those communing begins after breakfast. In other words, you may eat breakfast, but eat or drink nothing further after that. Parents should use their best judgment regarding their children, as always. Those who confessed on the weekend prior to the Wednesday Presanctified need not confess again on/before Wednesday.

Folks ask about this each year during Great Lent. This is an excerpt from a presentation I gave to the clergy of the Eastern American Diocese a few years ago. Hopefully it is helpful.

Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers
13/3/23, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

“Christ does not demand anything from you to give you His holy gifts other than to acknowledge that anything good you happen to have belongs to Him. Sympathize with him who does not have gifts. Don’t judge him because he doesn’t have any, saying that he is a sinner, depraved, evil, a babbler, a thief, a fornicator, a liar. If you acquire this knowledge, you will never be able to judge anyone, even if you see him committing a mortal sin, because you would say right away: “He doesn’t have Your grace, my Christ, and that is why he sins. If You leave me, I shall do worse things. If I am standing, it is because You are supporting me. This brother does as much as he can. He is blind. How do You expect him to see without eyes? He is poor. How can You demand riches from him? Give him riches. Give him eyes to see.””

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
12/3/23, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable – others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.
