Welcome to the Home Page of St. Vladimir Church!

Today's Date According to the Church (Old) Calendar:

According to the Executive Order of Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Policy of the Diocese of Chicago & Mid-America, St. Vladimir's is temporarily closed to public worship due to the coronavirus pandemic. Although we are saddened by this situation, we also understand that in this war all of society – including our St. Vladimir’s family – must unite to defeat the virus enemy. All resources must be brought to bear if victory is to be obtained. For us that means isolating ourselves from each other so that we do not in any way endanger those in our community who are at high risk of death from the virus. Most of us are healthy. Most of us are strong. Most of us will be unaffected by the virus. But we have to do our part – we have to fight selfish self interest – and we have to follow the advice of the experts and be obedient to the decisions of our ruling bishop. We thank everyone for their understanding and for their efforts to get us to the point of victory over this invisible foe!

Please contact me or Fr. Moses at any time for any spiritual or material support you need during this time of quarantine. With God’s help and our sincere effort we can have great hope in overcoming our common societal enemy! Let it never be said that we did not do our part with sincerity and zeal! Let it never be said that we felt ourselves “special” and not in need of taking part in this war! As Orthodox Christians let us be exemplary members of the society in which the merciful Lord has placed us! Let us serve others with valor and Christian Love, whether that service is (for most of us) just staying home and staying safe, or hands-on service of those in need, or other action that we may be called to in service to the eventual victory! All Divine Services will be broadcast on our Live Streams – please join us and worship with us just as you would when we gather in the Church, but from your own “desert” that the Lord has provided us during this time of Great Lent. We are pilgrims in this life dear brothers and sisters – the pandemic has just reminded us a bit of this reality. Glory to God for this and for all things!

Monday First Things: Teaching of the Holy Fathers

“The ability to tolerate one’s neighbor is the wisdom of life. One should perceive one’s neighbor as he is. Do you want him to be better? Pray for him. God can make him better. This is how Christian patience manifests itself.”

Lenten Recipes
12/12/19, 12:00 PM

We are often asked about Lenten recipes. One can't really make it through any fasting period on only peanut butter and jelly! We present here some recipes that you may find helpful. Remember: anything that is vegan fits the fast, and since vegan diets have become popular lately, you can search for these on the Internet. We can't comment on the quality of the recipes you'll find when you make such a search, but the recipes below are GOOD! Enjoy!

Matching Grant this Nativity Lent
11/12/19, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

A parish family has offered $2500 to our parish as a matching grant for the duration of the Nativity Lent (from now until January 7, 2020). How do we match that gift? By establishing a RECURRING donation to our parish. For every $1 given as a RECURRING donation to St. Vladimir’s we get $1 of that matching grant. A recurring donation is an automatic payment or transfer from your credit card or bank account to St. Vladimir’s that happens on a regular basis that you establish. Usually this is monthly, but you could do it using any frequency that is convenient for you. The key is that the donation be recurring – not a one time donation. Recurring donations are very important for our parish – and they are important for our parish family because they allow our parishioners to make their decisions about stewardship in a considered, prayerful way, and to fulfill the economic welfare piece of what a member of a parish is according to the Normal Parish Bylaws of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia:

“All Orthodox Christians of both sexes, regardless of their nationality, who have reached the age of 21 years, who pay the established membership dues, who make their confession and take Holy Communion not less than once a year, and who take care of the moral and economic welfare of the parish may become parish members.”

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
11/12/19, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.
