Monday First Things: Teaching of the Holy Fathers

These are challenging times, but these are also times when you need to be attentive to yourselves, so that political passions and human wisdom would not lead us astray from the path of the right faith. If we keep our faith pure, if we try to live by faith, God will send us peace and tranquility. However if we sink into the abyss of human passions, enmity, and confrontation, then, of course, we will stray from the Lords way...

The Ann Arbor Saint Our Spiritual Responsibility
5/12/19, 06:00 PM

December 12. This is a date to put on your calendars. Why? We have been given a HUGE privilege in that the Lord saw fit to allow St. Mardarije (Uskokovic) to repose in Ann Arbor. That is right - we have our own Ann Arbor saint! How many Orthodox Christians all over the world would LOVE to have their own saint! A saint that reposed in their city! And our response to this incredible gift that the the Lord gave us is: YAWN. Nothing. No response. No interest. Really? Have we become that cold to spiritual life that we look at the gift that the Lord gave us and our response is to be simply dead? Where are the newborn boys in our parish named Mardarije? Where are the molebens being served to OUR SAINT? Where is the personal veneration of the big and lovely icon we have in our parish church? Perhaps our issues stem from not knowing the life of this favorite of God.

Matching Grant this Nativity Lent
4/12/19, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

A parish family has offered $2500 to our parish as a matching grant for the duration of the Nativity Lent (from now until January 7, 2020). How do we match that gift? By establishing a RECURRING donation to our parish. For every $1 given as a RECURRING donation to St. Vladimirs we get $1 of that matching grant. A recurring donation is an automatic payment or transfer from your credit card or bank account to St. Vladimirs that happens on a regular basis that you establish. Usually this is monthly, but you could do it using any frequency that is convenient for you. The key is that the donation be recurring not a one time donation. Recurring donations are very important for our parish and they are important for our parish family because they allow our parishioners to make their decisions about stewardship in a considered, prayerful way, and to fulfill the economic welfare piece of what a member of a parish is according to the Normal Parish Bylaws of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia:

All Orthodox Christians of both sexes, regardless of their nationality, who have reached the age of 21 years, who pay the established membership dues, who make their confession and take Holy Communion not less than once a year, and who take care of the moral and economic welfare of the parish may become parish members.

Where is the #GivingTuesday Email from our Parish?
3/12/19, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Today, no doubt, you have been virtually attacked by emails from various nonprofits asking for support. You may be wondering where the email is from our own St. Vladimir parish. The short answer is: there will not be one. Why? We know that you know that it is part of our spiritual struggle to tithe to support our parish. That being said, those that are in a position to make a donation to another worthwhile charity beyond their tithe may want some advice, and we do have a few favorites that we would like to recommend to you if you are in this position. Please consider supporting one of the following in addition to supporting your parish. We thank you for your support today and all throughout the year!

The person who always has a prayer on his lips and in his heart, coupled with repentance, is a difficult target for the evil powers because prayer protects him.

Proper Attire in Church
30/11/19, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

As the weather cools it is always a temptation to come to church dressed not quite appropriately. We provide the information below as a guide to help make good decisions about what to wear to church:

http://stvladimiraami.org/flyers/properattire.pdf

PARENTS: it is YOUR responsibility to assure that your child is dressed appropriately.

TWO ISSUES WE STRUGGLE WITH EVERY YEAR: no shorts and no uncovered shoulders - no matter the age.

ANOTHER ISSUE WE STRUGGLE WITH: we have skirts and shawls to share if needed. But these are not items to be used as weapons in the attack of a visitor, but to be offered lovingly if it is clear that someone feels out of place because they innocently came to church dressed inappropriately.

Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or concerns.
