Death in a Place of Worship

On Saturday 11 people were killed and many were injured when the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh was attacked in what is being reported as a hate crime. It is important for us, as people of faith, to speak out clearly and unequivocally in such situations. There is a time and a place for theological disputes. This is not that time. This is not that place. This is the time and place to say without any hesitation: violence in a place of worship is NEVER acceptable. Never. Full stop.

Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers

God is loving to man, and loving in no small measure. For say not, I have committed fornication and adultery: I have done dreadful things, and not once only, but often: will He forgive? Will He grant pardon? Hear what the Psalmist says: “How great is the multitude of Your goodness, O Lord!”

Your accumulated offenses surpass not the multitude of God’s mercies: your wounds surpass not the great Physician’s skill. Only give yourself up in faith: tell the Physician your ailment: say thou also, like David: “I said, I will confess me my sin unto the Lord:” and the same shall be done in your case, which he says immediately: “And you forgave the wickedness of my heart.”

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
28/10/18, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable – others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: I Thessalonians 1:1-5 & Luke 9:18-22
Tuesday: I Thessalonians 1:6-10 & Luke 9:23-27
Wednesday: I Thessalonians 2:1-8 & Luke 9:44-50
Thursday: I Thessalonians 2:9-14 & Luke 9:49-56
Friday: I Thessalonians 2:14-19 & Luke 10:1-15
Saturday: II Corinthians 8:1-5 & Luke 7:2-10

Please find below several very nice articles on how to read the scripture from an Orthodox point of view.

By St. Justin (Popovich):

By Bishop Kalistos (Ware):

This short article explains to us not just HOW to read the scriptures, but also what our goal should be in reading the scriptures. A short read and well worth it:

As noted in the article above we need God's help and blessing to read and understand the scriptures correctly. What better way to entreat God's help in this regard than through prayer? Please find the prayer before reading the scriptures here:
