PLEASE NOTE! We have removed those from the list that we believe no longer should be present there. If you requested that someone be included in this list please review it carefully to make sure we have not removed someone erroneously. If we have, please contact Fr. Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
5/9/18, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

Help us Reach our Parish School Goal!
4/9/18, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Thank you to everyone who participated in our parish extraordinary meeting on Sunday, August 26! At this meeting we decided how we would move forward with the building of our parish school: by September 23, 2018 we will need to have $1200/month in pledges set for five years OR $70,000 in our Parish School bank account. So we have lots of work to do! Please help! This is a time sensitive situation – if we push further out than September 23 it is virtually certain that we will miss this year’s construction season, and that will make it impossible to begin instruction in 2019.

1. Please establish a pledge or make a donation today. Visit the fund raising page below or reach out to Fr. Gregory with questions

2. Talk to your friends. We can easily reach that $1200/month if we all chip in just a little! And if we add like-minded friends and loved ones who support Orthodox Christian education we can far surpass that goal!

3. Ask questions! Would you like to learn more about the Ann Arbor Orthodox Christian Academy? Send an email to Fr. Gregory, call him, or see him in church. He or any member of the School Steering Committee can answer your questions.

4. Volunteer! Join the School Steering Committee! We need lots of hands to help with this pleasant and much needed work.

This is a great challenge for our parish family, but a completely attainable one if we all pitch in and help just a bit. Please join our school team and help us surpass our goal!

Festival Sponsorship – How YOU can Help!
3/9/18, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please spread the word about festival sponsorships to your doctor, your dentist, your hair stylist, your dog groomer, your grass cutter, your water softener folks, etc., etc. YOU spend money (hundreds or thousands of dollars) at these businesses each year. Most of these businesses would be HAPPY to sponsor our festival since you have established a relationship already. The only way they will not sponsor the festival? If YOU don’t ask! So ask! :)

Share the information with them below - and consider sponsoring the festival yourself - every contribution helps us succeed!

Monday First Things: Teachings of the Holy Fathers
3/9/18, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

“Jesus tells us that His holy Disciples will be more courageous and more understanding when they would be, as the Scripture says, Endowed with power from on high (Luke 24:49), and that when their minds would be illuminated by the torch of the Spirit they would be able to see into all things, even though no longer able to question Him bodily present among them. The Saviour does not say that they would no longer as before need the light of His guidance, but that when they received His Spirit, when He was dwelling in their hearts, they would not be wanting in any good thing, and their minds would be filled with most perfect knowledge.”

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
2/9/18, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable – others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: Galatians 2:11-16 & Mark 5:24-34
Tuesday: Galatians 2:21-3:7 & Mark 6:1-7
Wednesday: Galatians 3:15-22 & Mark 6:7-13
Thursday: Galatians 3:23-4:5 & Mark 6:30-45
Friday: Galatians 4:8-21 & Mark 6:45-53
Saturday: I Corinthians 4:17-5:5 & Matthew 24:1-13

Please find below several very nice articles on how to read the scripture from an Orthodox point of view.

By St. Justin (Popovich):

By Bishop Kalistos (Ware):

http://www.orthodoxinfo.com/phronema/ware_howto.aspx

This short article explains to us not just HOW to read the scriptures, but also what our goal should be in reading the scriptures. A short read and well worth it:

As noted in the article above we need God's help and blessing to read and understand the scriptures correctly. What better way to entreat God's help in this regard than through prayer? Please find the prayer before reading the scriptures here:
