Racism in the Church & Care for the Garden

The Church exists in the world by design. The Lord founded His Church to provide a haven for those who live in the world but who seek the Kingdom of God. But, because the Church exists in the world, ideas foreign to her from time to time seep in. It is our job as Orthodox Christians to maintain the purity of the faith and, as St. Paul says, to test the spirits. Put another way, we all need to have our personal “spiritual filter”, built and strengthened by our ongoing struggle to be transformed into the children of God. But as a Church we need to have such a filter too, and the faithful have the responsibility to sound the alarm when something sneaks through the filter...

Bishop Visit Preparation: Pious Behavior in Church + 3 Lampadas
23/7/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Of course we should behave appropriately in church and we believe that everyone WANTS to behave appropriately, but sometimes we don’t know or we forget about the special times in the Divine Service when we should not move about, or other important aspects of our worship. We include below a little pamphlet which reminds us of these things, and which also outlines the schema of the lights above the royal doors at St. Vladimir’s (when the outside lamps are lit we should not move about unless it is a matter of life and death). Please review this pamphlet and please see Fr. Gregory with questions. We appreciate sincerely your efforts to behave appropriately in the parish church during the Divine Services!

Bishop Visit Preparation: Greeting Others in Church
22/7/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

As we prepare ourselves for Archbishop Peter’s visit and examine some of the practices that we have acquired during the course of the pandemic we should also examine how we greet others in church. If you arrive before the beginning of the Divine Services (before the Hours on Sunday or before the Vigil on Saturday) it is permissible to speak briefly with others in a whisper in the church proper. Any extended conversations should be taken outside. If, however, you arrive at the church when the Divine Services have already begun, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES is it permissible to begin any sort of conversation. You may bow to your friends as a greeting as you take your place in the church. The parish church is God’s House. It is a place for worship. This is sometimes a challenge for us since we have our parish meal in the church rather than in a separate hall. Nonetheless, let us strive to remember not to talk during the Divine Services, and be humble if we need to be reminded of this by the Parish Council member on duty.

BIshop Visit Preparation - Catechumens Bow Your Heads
22/7/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

As we review our parish practices in preparation for Archbishop Peter's visit we would like to share this small correction with you. At about the midway point of the Divine Liturgy the Deacon intones "Catechumens bow your heads unto the Lord!". And the Catechumens should in fact do this. But those who are not Catechumens should not. :) No one will be fined or otherwise punished for doing this - but it is good for us to be the rational sheep of the flock of our Lord Jesus Christ and follow the directions the Deacons and Priests are giving us as a worshiping Eucharistic community during the Divine Liturgy to the greatest extent we can. Please see me with questions.

No Photography During Archbishop Peter Visit
21/7/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please note that we do not allow photography during hierarchal divine services at St. Vladimir's. There were will be several trained photographers taking pictures according to the guidelines that Archbishop Peter has provided. We ask others to refrain from taking pictures and rather enjoy the pictures our official photographers will take and post on our Facebook page and our parish photo album. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this regard. Please see Fr. Gregory if you have questions or concerns.

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
21/7/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of Blessed Theophylact

For Youth: from the Antiochian Archdiocese (various age groups)

St. Vladimir’s Day – Save the Date!
20/7/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

This year our parish celebrates its 40th anniversary! Archbishop Peter plans to join us for the Divine Services on July 27 at 5:00 p.m. and July 28 at 9:00 a.m. Much more information will be coming soon, but most importantly, SAVE THE DATE! You won’t want to miss the Divine Services led by Vladyka on these days! Ask for the time off now if you haven’t already. And if you’d like to help volunteer to help with the 40th anniversary celebrations please contact Leta Nikulshia or Marina Edwards at info@stvladimiraami.org or see them in church. Happy birthday to us! Let’s celebrate it triumphantly as a parish family on July 28!

Bishop Visit Preparation - Logistics after Communion
20/7/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We have noticed an odd practice in our parish that no doubt Vladyka will notice also, and correct. This is the practice of everyone gathering on the north side of the church after they partake of Holy Communion until the faithful are blessed with the chalice and the priest says "always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages!". There is no reason to gather on the north side of the church, and as more and more people return after the pandemic it is logistically almost impossible in any case. You should return to your place after you partake of Holy Communion. Please contact me with questions.
