Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers
8/7/19, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Human beings have accumulated in their coffers gold and silver, clothes more sumptuous than useful, diamonds and other objects that are evidence of war and tyranny; then a foolish arrogance hardens their hearts; for their brothers in distress, no pity. What utter blindness! . . . Attend not to the law of the strong but to the law of the Creator. Help nature to the best of your ability, honor the freedom of creation, protect your species from dishonor, come to its aids in sickness, rescue it from poverty . Seek to distinguish yourself from others only in your generosity. Be like gods to the poor, imitating Gods mercy. Humanity has nothing so much in common with God as the ability to do good.

Silence in Church Please
6/7/19, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

It is important that we make an effort a real effort to refrain from speaking in church. We have gotten a bit lax about this lately and the timing is not good. Archbishop Peter will be visiting soon and he will most certainly correct this inappropriate behavior if we do not correct it ourselves. And we will like it a lot less if he feels the need to do this than if we learn to do this on our own. If one absolutely must have a conversation during the time of the Divine Services this should be done either:

1. In the kiosk area IN VERY HUSHED TONES. The glass doors are by no means sound proof. We are failing quite terribly here. The Parish Council will discuss this at the next meeting and measures will be taken to cut down on the cacophony coming from behind the glass doors during the Divine Liturgy.

2. Outside

3. Most appropriately, unless the conversation involves a life or death situation: at the meal after the Divine Liturgy

4. We ask parents that if they bring toys for their children that these be soft toys that to do not make noise when dropped on the floor or on the benches.

Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or concerns.

Lampadas above the Royal Doors - Please be Attentive
5/7/19, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We ask all to be attentive to the system we have devised to help folks know when they can and when they cannot move about during the Divine Services to light candles, etc. Even as we ask all to be attentive we also ask all to be loving, and if someone clearly is not aware that we have reached a time in the Divine Service when we should be still that we share that information with them lovingly and in a way that will not cause embarrassment. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or concerns.

Please join us for a series of spiritual discussion this fall on Wednesday evenings following the weekly akathist for the ill. The topic of the discussions will be the Divine Services. We will go into some detail about the meaning, symbolism, and history of the Divine Liturgy and the other services we often participate in as Orthodox Christians. There will be a little homework, but not much we promise. More soon to come, but please keep your Wednesday evenings free if you can beginning with the first Wednesday of October!

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
3/7/19, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the childrens portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of Blessed Theophylact

For Children: from the Antiochian Archdiocese (various age groups)

As a fish cannot swim without water, and as a bird cannot fly without air, so a Christian cannot advance a single step without Christ.

You Are a Missionary
29/6/19, 06:00 AM

The Lord has entrusted us with the Pearl of Great Price the Orthodox Faith. Are we hiding this? Are we keeping it for ourselves? Or are we following the example of the Apostles and working actively to spread our saving faith? If you had the cure for a bodily disease like cancer you would never keep that to yourself it is obvious that this would be unethical and sinful. But we have the cure for DEATH! And sadly we mostly keep it to ourselves. And that is even more unethical and sinful that hiding the cure for any bodily disease. Share your faith. Invite a friend, loved one, or neighbor to the All English Cycle of Services this coming Friday and Saturday and assure them that you will be there to welcome them to St. Vladimirs. If we would all do this if we would make just a minimal effort to invite others we would need to seriously rethink the size of the new church we plan to build because it would be way TOO SMALL. Lets do that. Lets make all our plans useless because there are just too many people in our parish family! Success only comes before work in the dictionary let us get to work spreading our Orthodox Faith by simply inviting others to join us at St. Vladimirs!
