Monday First Things: Teaching of the Holy Fathers

One should not seek among others the truth that can be easily gotten from the Church. For in her, as in a rich treasury, the apostles have placed all that pertains to truth, so that everyone can drink this beverage of life. She is the door of life.

Ask the Priest Homework
20/3/20, 12:00 PM

In order to make Ask the Priest more engaging I am suggesting the following video. Please watch it before Ask the Priest on Monday at 8:00 p.m. so we can discuss the very interesting life of the priest who is described in the video. This was to have been the Great Lenten Lecture topic of Subdeacon Micah Chisholm on March 29, but since we had to cancel the lecture series this year I think it is OK to share this now. :)

LIFE OF FR. NIKOLA YANNEY

We will discuss much more than this, but I think it makes sense to spend some time on this excellent video. If you have other suggestions for future AtP homework please share with Fr. Gregory.

Great Lent began March 2 - Pascha is April 19
18/3/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please note that Great Lent began this year on March 2. The week previous to this is a week where all foods are allowed except for meat. During Great Lent we abstain from meat and dairy products including fish (although fish is allowed on Annunciation, April 7 and Palm Sunday, April 12). Let us recall that fasting is a tool given to us by God to aid us spiritually. For some it is easy to fast, for others it is difficult. However, what is most important is that we make a sincere effort to follow the fast. Why? Simply because the fast helps us to see our sins by helping us to focus spiritually. Eating light foods, or perhaps rather, abstaining from heavy foods such as meats and cheeses, allows us to be less focused on our stomachs and more focused on our souls, and of course, in this season when we undergo our journey to the Resurrection of our Lord we dearly wish to improve ourselves spiritually that we might meet the risen Christ better than we were when we began Great Lent. St. John Chrysostom writes that we abstain from meats that we might abstain from our sins. This nicely sums up the reason the Holy Church, as a loving mother, gives us the gift of fasting. Pascha is April 19 may God grant us all a spiritually profitable Great Lent!

Parish Coronavirus Update 3/18/20
18/3/20, 12:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please see a very important communication for our St. Vladimir's family at the link below:

PARISH CORONAVIRUS UPDATE 3/18/20

This communication covers the following key issues:

1. The Instructional Letter from Archbishop Peter to the parishes from 3/17/20

2. How we will put into place Vladyka's instructions in our parish

3. Sign up for Divine Services (that will make sense when you read the parts above) so we keep to our 50 person maximum

4. Confession as our weakest Public Health link and how we can minimize the risk

Thank you for your attention to these important matters. We know you are getting fatigued from all this information and we will try to keep this to a minimum. But if we don't share this life and death information it will be our sin and the innocent will suffer.

In Christ,

Fr. Gregory

Twelve Years from the Repose of Metropolitan Laurus
16/3/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Today marks twelve years since the repose of His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus. On the Sunday of Orthodox 2008 Vladyka failed to appear at the entrance of the cathedral at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. The clergy went to his skete to gather him and found that he had peacefully reposed during the night. I still remember that day. We found out at the end of the Liturgy and we had the great honor to serve a memorial service right then and there while everyone was still in the church. Yes we do not do memorial services on Sundays. But there is an exception to every rule, and if we would not have served the service I am convinced that the faithful would have begun to sing the pannykhida hymns extemporaneously in any case...
