Thanksgiving is Coming – Special Collections
24/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Each year around the Thanksgiving Holiday we have two special collections in our parish to assist those in need. We thank God prayerfully for His bounty towards us, and we thank Him materially by helping those who are struggling in this life.

On the Sunday BEFORE Thanksgiving (this coming Sunday, November 22) we have a collection to support International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC). IOCC is the clearinghouse charity for all Orthodox Churches in North America. They provide help to all in need in North American and throughout the world – regardless of their confession of faith.

Update 11/23/20: We collected $172 on Sunday, November 22 for IOCC. Thank you all!

On the Sunday AFTER Thanksgiving (Sunday, November 29) we have a collection to support our Diocesan Fund for those in Need. Archbishop Peter is often approached for help – this fund allows him to help those who are appealing to him in their time of difficulty.

Both these collections will take place in the church at the end of the Liturgy, as we receive the antidron. If you would like to support the November 29 collection you can do that here (please specify the reason for your donation):

Nativity Lent Begins November 28
21/11/20, 12:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please note that the yearly Lenten period in preparation for our Lord’s Nativity begins on November 28. From this day until January 7 we do not partake of meat or dairy products. On many days during this lent fish is allowed. Please consult the parish schedule of services for details in this regard. Have questions about fasting? Never tried to follow the fast before? Please talk to Fr. Gregory for answers! “We abstain from meats that we might abstain from the passions...” writes St. John Chrysostom. Let us indeed use the fast for what it is – a tool to aid us in our spiritual struggle for salvation!

St. Michael & All Angels Commemorated Friday & Saturday
18/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please join us Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. for the annual commemoration of St. Michael and all the Angels. We have quite a few parishioners named after the angels (our Michaels, Raphaels, Gabriels, etc.), and our Mother Raphaela in Australia celebrates on this day too. We congratulated all on their name's day!

All are welcome! The services will be inside the church, so we ask that you sign up. This allows us to understand the number of people that will attend since we have limited, physically distanced spaces inside the temple:

Winter Worship Space – Last Week of Fund Raising
12/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Everyone likes to see the combination of words that amount to something like “...end of fund raising.” That includes the Parish Council. We would prefer not to ask you to donate – we’d like to see it just happen without any effort on our side. But since none of us, as far as we know, can read minds, we need to tell you what is happening in the parish so you can take appropriate measures based on your abilities and your reality. We start construction of the Ann Arbor Orthodox Classical Academy on November 16, so November 15 be our last day of fund raising for this effort. Let us be thankful for those who make it possible to raise over $5,000 so far! And let us strive to get to that goal of $15,000!

If you haven’t had a chance yet to make a donation for the winter worship space please take a moment and visit our giving page for that effort:

Special Presentation Sunday, November 15: Ann Arbor Orthodox Classical Academy
10/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Construction of our new parish school, the Ann Arbor Orthodox Classical Academy, begins on Monday, November 16. On Sunday, November 15 we will have a special presentation by the School Board of Directors during our parish meal. This is an important presentation for our parish for the following reasons:

1. This is our school. We are inviting all the Orthodox parishes in Washtenaw, Western Wayne, and Jackson counties to partner with us, but the school will live with our parish family. We hope that it will be the jumping off point for a great spread of Orthodox education in Michigan, but the Lord has blessed us to start this movement and so we must meet His challenge!

2. Many of our parishioners are supporting the school on many levels, but we need to now move all our parish family focus and work to the school effort – that means we need your time, talent, and treasure to execute this project.

3. Shortly after instruction begins in the fall of 2021 we will hand off the school loan to the Board of Directors and we will begin to focus on our next project: our new parish church and social hall. We need to build momentum with the school project to get to the new church. We need your help with the school project to get to the next project! One depends on the other – let us work together from the beginning of the school project to the end of the new church project!

4. We are committed to be a parish that raises saints. The school is one part of this effort. Obviously not everyone will utilize the school for all their children for various reasons. But many will. And we want our school to be a place not just for the children of those that can pay full tuition, but for all children. We need your help to make this dream a reality. As a parish family we can make dreams – with God’s help! But success only comes before work in the dictionary – let us work together to reach success!

No doubt there is more. For now let us plan to participate in the presentation on November 15. This will be our first time making this presentation. We need your feedback to make it better! Because after our parish family experiences the presentation it will be refined and brought to many parishes in our region. Your feedback will be a great help! Please join us!

All English Cycle is this Friday & Saturday
10/11/20, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

This Friday & Saturday we hold our all-English cycle of Divine Services at St. Vladimir’s. This is a great opportunity to introduce our friends, loved ones, and neighbors to the beauty of the Orthodox Divine Services. But if you keep this secret they won’t know. As a rule we are very bad at secrets. Terrible actually. Yet this one we seems to do relatively well at keeping – and that is bad! Let’s tattle! Let’s tell! Let’s gossip! Don’t keep the cure for death that is the Orthodox Faith a secret – invite a friend, loved one, neighbor, stranger to our all-English services this weekend!
