Congratulations to all with the beginning of the Nativity Lent!

We congratulate all our parish family with the beginning of the yearly Lenten period preceding the feast of our Lords Nativity! This Lenten period begins November 28 each year and runs until January 7 the feast of our Lords Nativity. This Lenten period is much less stringent than Great Lent. During this fast, as usual, we abstain from meat and dairy products. But fish is allowed on many days. Please consult our parish schedule (linked below) for more details on the culinary aspects of fasting. Of course, the culinary fast is a tool to aid us spiritually to prepare for our Lords Nativity it is not an end unto itself. If you have not fasted in the past please consult Fr. Gregory for practical advice on how to be successful in fasting. Fasting a very important way that we place ourselves in obedience to the Church, the Ark of our salvation, and extraordinarily helpful in our spiritual struggle to draw nearer to our Lord at this special time of year.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We congratulate all our St. Vladimir's family and friends with the Thanksgiving Holiday. This civil holiday - very Christian in its character - reminds us of our need to thank God for His many blessings upon us. May we humbly suggest, before you sit down to your family dinner today, that you take a few minutes either privately or as a family to thank God for the many blessings He has given you this past year, and for the many blessings He has given to our parish family. We are privileged to call you all brothers and sisters in Christ, and we thank God for you and for our parish family. Happy Thanksgiving!

10% of Festival Proceeds go to Charity Parish Council Decisions
22/11/17, 06:00 PM

We ask each of our parishioners to make a tithe to the parish.

Some thoughts on tithing from an Orthodox point of view can be found here and may be helpful:

https://blogs.ancientfaith.com/roadsfromemmaus/2015/10/27/6-reasons-why-tithing-is-good-for-an-orthodox-parish/

You can find more in this article, which is on our parish web site:

http://stvladimiraami.org/pamphlets/syn ... rdship.pdf

It only makes sense if we ask our parishioners to tithe that we would arrange for 10% of our festival proceeds would go to charities other than St. Vladimir's (10% of our regular collections go to the diocese by the way).

At the meeting of the Parish Council on Saturday, November 18 it was decided to give split the 10% we are giving to charity from this years festival proceeds. Half of the donation will go to Christ the Savior Orthodox Mission in River Rouge, MI (formerly All Saints Mission) and half will go to Zoe for Life Michigan. Thank you all for your support of the festival and for making it possible for us to support these important Orthodox charitable organizations!

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
22/11/17, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the childrens portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of Blessed Theophylact:

Monday First Things: Teachings of the Holy Fathers

The truly intelligent man pursues one sole objective: to obey and conform to the God of all. With this single aim in view, he disciplines his soul, and whatever he may encounter in the course of his life, he gives thanks to God for the compass and depth of His providential ordering of all things.

For it is absurd to be grateful to doctors who give us bitter and unpleasant medicines to cure our bodies, and yet to be ungrateful to God for what appears to us to be harsh, not grasping that all we encounter is for our benefit and in accordance with His providence. For knowledge of God and faith in Him is the salvation and perfection of the soul.
