10% of Festival Proceeds go to Charity – Parish Council Decisions
22/11/17, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We ask each of our parishioners to make a tithe to the parish.

Some thoughts on tithing from an Orthodox point of view can be found here and may be helpful:

https://blogs.ancientfaith.com/roadsfromemmaus/2015/10/27/6-reasons-why-tithing-is-good-for-an-orthodox-parish/

You can find more in this article, which is on our parish web site:

http://stvladimiraami.org/pamphlets/syn ... rdship.pdf

It only makes sense if we ask our parishioners to tithe that we would arrange for 10% of our festival proceeds would go to charities other than St. Vladimir's (10% of our regular collections go to the diocese by the way).

At the meeting of the Parish Council on Saturday, November 18 it was decided to give split the 10% we are giving to charity from this year’s festival proceeds. Half of the donation will go to Christ the Savior Orthodox Mission in River Rouge, MI (formerly All Saint’s Mission) and half will go to Zoe for Life Michigan. Thank you all for your support of the festival and for making it possible for us to support these important Orthodox charitable organizations!

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
22/11/17, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of Blessed Theophylact:

For children, from the Antiochian Archdiocese (various age groups):

Monday First Things: Teachings of the Holy Fathers

“The truly intelligent man pursues one sole objective: to obey and conform to the God of all. With this single aim in view, he disciplines his soul, and whatever he may encounter in the course of his life, he gives thanks to God for the compass and depth of His providential ordering of all things.

For it is absurd to be grateful to doctors who give us bitter and unpleasant medicines to cure our bodies, and yet to be ungrateful to God for what appears to us to be harsh, not grasping that all we encounter is for our benefit and in accordance with His providence. For knowledge of God and faith in Him is the salvation and perfection of the soul.”

“One should not say that it is impossible to reach a virtuous life; but one should say that it is not easy. Nor do those who have reached it find it easy to maintain. Those who are devout and whose intellect enjoys the love of God participate in the life of virtue; the ordinary intellect, however, is worldly and wavering, producing both good and evil thoughts, because it is changeful by nature and directed towards material things. But the intellect that enjoys the love of God punishes the evil which arises spontaneously because of man’s laziness.”
