Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
28/7/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of Blessed Theophylact

For Youth: from the Antiochian Archdiocese (various age groups)

Bishop Visit Preparation: Greeting Others in Church
27/7/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

As we prepare ourselves for Archbishop Peter’s visit and examine some of the practices that we have acquired during the course of the pandemic we should also examine how we greet others in church. If you arrive before the beginning of the Divine Services (before the Hours on Sunday or before the Vigil on Saturday) it is permissible to speak briefly with others in a whisper in the church proper. Any extended conversations should be taken outside. If, however, you arrive at the church when the Divine Services have already begun, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES is it permissible to begin any sort of conversation. You may bow to your friends as a greeting as you take your place in the church. The parish church is God’s House. It is a place for worship. This is sometimes a challenge for us since we have our parish meal in the church rather than in a separate hall. Nonetheless, let us strive to remember not to talk during the Divine Services, and be humble if we need to be reminded of this by the Parish Council member on duty.

Bishop Visit Preparation: Pious Behavior in Church + 3 Lampadas
26/7/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Of course we should behave appropriately in church and we believe that everyone WANTS to behave appropriately, but sometimes we don’t know or we forget about the special times in the Divine Service when we should not move about, or other important aspects of our worship. We include below a little pamphlet which reminds us of these things, and which also outlines the schema of the lights above the royal doors at St. Vladimir’s (when the outside lamps are lit we should not move about unless it is a matter of life and death). Please review this pamphlet and please see Fr. Gregory with questions. We appreciate sincerely your efforts to behave appropriately in the parish church during the Divine Services!

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
25/7/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable – others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: Romans 16:17-24 & Matthew 13:10-23
Tuesday: I Corinthians 1:1-9 & Matthew 13:24-30
Wednesday: I Corinthians 2:9-3:8 & Matthew 13:31-36
Thursday: I Corinthians 3:18-23 & Matthew 13:36-43
Friday: I Corinthians 4:5-8 & Matthew 13:44-54
Saturday: Romans 9:1-5 & Matthew 9:18-26

Please find below several very nice articles on how to read the scripture from an Orthodox point of view.
