Silence in Church Please - EVEN IN THE BARN
31/3/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

It is important that we make an effort – a real effort – to refrain from speaking in church. Since we were outside most of the summer we have unfortunately adapted our outside paradigm to church services rather than our church paradigm to being outside. LET'S NOT DO THIS AS WE ARE WORSHIPING IN THE BARN! If one absolutely must have a conversation during the time of the Divine Services this should be done either:

1. In the kiosk area IN VERY HUSHED TONES. The acoustics are excellent in the barn. The choir's beautiful voices carry throughout the space very readily - as do your conversations. :)

2. Outside (but please do not slam the barn door)

3. Most appropriately, unless the conversation involves a life or death situation: at the meal after the Divine Liturgy

4. We ask parents that if they bring toys for their children that these be soft toys that to do not make noise when dropped on the floor.

Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or concerns.

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
31/3/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers

“My House shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”

Everyone knows that a church calls for reverence, for a collecting of thoughts, for deep thinking about God, and for standing in the presence of God, but who fulfills this? People go to church with a desire to pray, to stand in it for a while with warm fervour; but then thoughts begin to wander, and bargaining begins in one’s head even louder than that which the Lord found in the Jerusalem temple.

Why is this so?

Because the way one stands in church is a reflection of one’s entire life. As people live, so do they behave in church. A church influences and somewhat supports spiritual movements; but then the usual course of one’s spiritual constitution takes over.

Therefore if you want your time in church to consist of worthily standing in the face of the Lord, prepare for this in your ordinary life; walk, as much as you can, in a prayerful frame of mind.

This labour will bring you to the point that in church also you will stand reverently all the time. This reverence will inspire you to be reverent in your ordinary life as well. Thus you will walk ever higher and higher. Say, ‘O Lord, help’ —and begin!

Thank God, with Fr. Joseph joining us we are able to have additional Divine Services at St. Vladimir’s, but that means that we have demand for more prosphora. That is, we need more prosphora bakers! If you would like to learn how to fulfill this blessed duty please contact Fr. Gregory. Your efforts will directly and positively effect our ability to serve the Divine Liturgy more often, which benefits our entire parish family!

Folks ask about this each year during Great Lent. This is an excerpt from a presentation I gave to the clergy of the Eastern American Diocese two years ago. Hopefully it is helpful.
