New Year’s Resolution + Harass Fr. Gregory
18/2/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

New Year’s resolution’s are not bad, but they are only good in as much as we actually follow them. Sometimes we make silly resolutions that we know we will not follow. I don’t want us to do that as a parish family. Rather – I think we need to make a resolution that we learn the hymns that Archbishop Peter has asked us to sing together as a parish during the Divine Services. We sing these in English sometimes and in Church Slavonic sometimes. If we want to sing this well, and strong, and triumphantly we need to practice. Success only comes before work in the dictionary! How to practice you ask? Visit this page – all the links are there in English, Church Slavonic, and phonetic Church Slavonic (in Latin letters):

THINGS WE SING TOGETHER AT ST. VLADIMIR'S

Please make a habit of practicing these in both languages. AT A MINIMUM we should memorize these hymns in English or Church Slavonic. And we should sing these TRIUMPHANTLY - not as if we are singing in our sleep!

I am seeking a volunteer to harass me – yes – harass me! About what? The prayer after the meal. We have not been good about doing that. And when I say “we” I mean “me”. So I need some help? Would you like to have the obedience to harass me mercilessly? Please let me know – I need some help with this! Fr. Gregory

Two Chalices – What to do?
11/2/20, 12:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Thank God, we have the opportunity almost every Sunday to commune from two chalices. But we don’t really commune from two chalices – we commune from only one. And the EXACT SAME COMMUNION is in every chalice. Both of our chalices, and every chalice in the entire Orthodox Church. Since the Communion is the same we should go to the chalice that is most convenient for all of our brothers and sisters. In other words, we should go to the chalice that has the fewest people in line. At the beginning of Communion it is hard to tell which is the shorter line, but usually after a little time the line in the middle is longer. Some of those who are in that line should, with proper decorum, move to the other line. Or if the line on the side is longer, some folks should move to the middle. It doesn’t matter which priest is communing the people at which place – the Communion is exactly the same. Please be kind and gracious to our fellow believers and go to the shortest line, to the greatest extent possible. If you have questions please see Fr. Gregory or Fr. Moses.

“Sorrows are a spiritual lesson by which a man learns his weakness and the power of God. The harder the sorrow, the deeper the lesson is. All we have to do is to endure these tribulations with patience and gratitude to God.”
